In and Out is amazing but the chances of those French fries helping us feel better and supercharged (in the long run) is probably slim. There are certain foods that can actually help decrease the risk of certain diseases and pain. Adding some of these foods to your next meal may be beneficial and keep you performing at your best!
-Sliced Avocado to prevent injuries such as stress fractures: A 2008 University of Buffalo study found that runners who suffered the most stress fractures consumed significantly fewer fat calories then non-injured runners. With loads of training, make sure you are eating healthy unsaturated fats (such as avocado, nuts, seeds, and olive oil.) These are needed to absorb fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamin D (the primary regulator of calcium absorption) GOT MILK?
-Sear pork tenderloin and red bell peppers to prevent iron deficiency: Iron helps carry oxygen to the muscles so low levels of iron make you less aerobically efficient! Yikes, we don’t want that for underwater sets, let alone in any exercise! Pork tenderloin has iron levels similar to beef, but you are only eating 1/3 of the fat and it is cheaper on the wallet! Serve with red bell peppers, which have more vitamin C then most other veggies and fruits. Since it has so much VC, the iron can be changed to a more easily absorbed form!
-Coffee to help exercise- induced asthma: Don’t let anyone tell you this stuff is bad for you, because it has more benefits then downfalls. A study at Indiana University proves that athletes who were given caffeine one hour before exercise had less wheezing, coughing, and other asthma symptoms. It gives us a boost but relaxes our airway muscles making it easier to breathe. Ahhhhh.
-An apple a day to prevent the flu: Maybe this saying is true? The 2008 study for the University of South Carolina found that quercetin, an antioxidant in apples, appears to prevent the replication of viruses in the body. This can help prevent or shorten your vulnerability to colds during tough training. Talk to me in December, because I will now be living off these during X-mas training! Just don’t peel the skin on the apples (where all the good stuff is found)
-Green Tea to help prevent skin cancer: With my mom as a survivor of the nasty disease, Melanoma, I
try to sip this daily. In a 2009 study at the University of Alabama concluded that green tea is filled with polyphenols that may protect against UV-induced tumor development by reducing skin inflammation and DNA damage. Healthier and younger looking skin = no Botox in 20 years. But still don't substitute this for sunscreen!
Ps: green tea helps boost weight loss and endurance by activating fat burning during training! OHH. M. G.
